The brief
Two founders had a validated idea, a clickable prototype, and a launch date agreed with three pilot customers. They had no engineer. The product needed to issue invoices, take card and bank payments, reconcile them, and show a business owner what cash was coming in and going out over the next 90 days.
The constraint was time. Eight weeks from first commit to real money moving through the system.
What I built
A single web app with a small API behind it. I kept the architecture deliberately boring so the founders could hire a second engineer later without a handover call.
- Invoice builder with templates, recurring schedules, and PDF generation.
- Payments and payouts through Stripe, with webhook-driven reconciliation.
- Cash-flow forecast that blends issued invoices, expected payment dates, and known outgoings.
- Role-based access for owners, bookkeepers, and read-only accountants.
- CSV and accounting-package exports, because every pilot customer asked for them in week one.
Weekly demos to the founders, with each week's scope agreed on Monday and shipped by Friday. Anything that didn't survive contact with a pilot customer was cut rather than polished.
Outcome
Live in eight weeks. All three pilot customers converted to paying accounts within the first month, and the forecast view became the feature the founders led their fundraising deck with.
The codebase was handed to their first full-time hire with a two-hour walkthrough and a README.
